What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is an infection of the gums caused by bacteria that live under the gum tissue and the precursor to periodontal disease, also known as gum disease. One of the most common signs of gingivitis is inflammation of the gums. Red, swollen gums that bleed during flossing and brushing are a sign that the gums are infected.

Because gingivitis is the earliest form of periodontal disease, it shares many of the same symptoms:

  • Red, Puffy, or Swollen Gums
  • Sensitive or Bleeding Gums
  • Bad Taste in Mouth or Bad Breath
  • Loose or Mobile Teeth
  • Pain During Eating

Gingivitis is caused by plaque, a thin biofilm that constantly forms on teeth. When plaque is not properly removed or where it is difficult or impossible to reach, it hardens and becomes tartar. Once plaque has hardened into tartar, it generally requires a dentist or a dental hygienist to remove it.

Like its advanced form, periodontal disease, gingivitis is caused by bacteria. Gingvitis can cause the gap between the teeth and the gums to become larger, allowing more bacteria to grow and infect the gum tissue. Proper diet and nutrition, regular dental check ups, and proper oral hygiene can prevent and reverse the build up of plaque and stop gingivitis.
